HOW TO GET A STATE ID OR REINSTATE YOUR DRIVER’S LICENSE
A step-by-step guide to getting identification and getting back on the road legally in Canyon County
Having a valid ID is essential for getting a job, opening a bank account, and rebuilding stability in recovery. If your license was suspended, or you never had a state ID, this page walks you through how to get one (or get your driving privileges back) at the Idaho DMV.
Types of ID Situations
Whether you need a brand-new ID or are reinstating a suspended license, the process starts at your local Idaho DMV office. Bring as much documentation as you can to avoid multiple trips.
Getting a New State ID — For residents who don’t have a valid Idaho ID or license. If you’ve lost your ID, had it stolen, or never had one, the Idaho DMV can issue a standard state identification card for a small fee. Where to start: Visit your local Idaho DMV office with proof of identity and residency and request a state ID card application.
Reinstating a Suspended License — For residents whose license was suspended for fines, tickets, or a DUI. License suspensions usually require paying outstanding fines, completing required courses, and paying a reinstatement fee before driving privileges are restored. What Happens After Your Visit
If you’re getting a new ID, it’s typically mailed within a couple of weeks; a temporary paper copy is usually provided the same day. If you’re reinstating a license, you’ll receive confirmation once all requirements (fines, courses, fees) are completed and processed.
